Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Someone needs to invent a broody cam.  Rig a Wooden falsie egg with an LED light and a small camera imbeded in it, oh and with a small microphone so you can hear peeping.  Then If you want to see the action turn the light on and the camera.....  You could even do red light so it wont disturb momma.

I think that's a great idea! Unfortunately I also think my Smokey would be the first to try and hatch it! LOL!

Here's my hen and her babies,

Awwhhh, pretty momma and cute babies!

BIG concern as suzettes nest(my broody suzette) is an 18"x24" milk crate and I realize now(always too late) that it won't allow any younguns to get too far. NOW I see that ya'll use open ended, on floor, nests so big concern.

After they hatch out, by the third day, you could set her up in an area where she can take them out to eat and drink and scratch around. Don't worry about it now.

Operation Smokey move went down a little later then I expected. The sun seems to be setting later these days. I moved her and her eggs over to the area I previously prepared. Did it at the darker side of dusk. Then I went back out about ten minutes later when it was almost black outside and checked without a flashlight. She was still sitting on the eggs and they were under her. If she stays put tomorrow then we have success!

THERE B PEEPING!!!!!!!!And I know how to change text size now!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG-My son was out with me and held the egg and we heard peeping but I have 6 wk. olds close by(they don't understand roosting/chicken trance yet) so I leaned towards them and my sons palm WAS PEEPING!!!!!!!!! So is that like when a womans water breaks then it means birth is soon? And this wasn't planned for moms day but what a thrill(I HOPE). OMG. Could there possibly be a hatch in a.m.??

Yay! Always exciting! When you hear peeping it means they have pipped internally and it wont be long until they pip externally! Congrats! You may just have babies waiting on you in the morning.
