Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I'm joining in...again :). One of my silkies went broody a week and half ago, the day before my shipped eggs arrive. So, I put several under her and several in my incubator. Wasn't sure she would stay sitting but, she has and I candled all eggs and so far between hen and incubator I have 11 for sure developing and 2 questionables, cause I can't see in the dark eggs (Marans) but dark mass has grown, out of 16 shipped eggs...not bad...so far anyways :)

Just finished up my first incubator hatch last night so, I'm ready for the next batch! Lol

My buff silky got all mad at me because for the fourth day in a row I've taken her egg and removed her from the nest box where she was lingering. I do not want any broodies right now.

we have little babies under the broody in the basement!!!!!!!! one egg when I got home was still in the brood box and she had her chicks out...it had gotten cold but the chick inside was peeping so I stuck it back under her. It is pipped but not hatched... she keeps forgetting about it. I have tucked it back under her twice. what should I do?

That's all you can do really. It may be a defective chick and she's trying to abandon it. But if it wants to hatch I say let it hatch. It should be out shortly if its going to make it. I don't try to help the out, but you can search for how to help a chick hatch if you think you want to try.

okay so I helped the chick hatch. there was a tiny bit of blood but otherwise chick seemed okay...

Gaaaah! I think we're down to 3 eggs!!! :(
I just went out to check on broody's water and she'd done a massive broody poop and had half covered one of the eggs.
She'd moved the other 3, but the poopy one was quite cold.
I quickly cleaned up that side of the nest and tried to wipe some of the poop off the egg.
She hopped off the nest whilst I was cleaning :( She better hop back on!!!
Also, it looked like there may have been a bit of blood in the poop, should I do anything for her?!
Though it may have been blueberries, as I gave her a few yesterday...
