Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I don't have to worry bout water freezing. It's staying round 65. her food and water are with in her reach. She is not messing in her nest or the brood box I have her in. But when she goes. OMG. I couldn't believe that much could have come from her
She will be fine, once they get near to day 17 or 18 or so she may not want to get up at all... they kind of put themselves into 'lockdown' the last couple of days, so let her decide what she wants to do...

As you can tell this is my first time for hatching it just kinda worries me that she isn't eating. I spent bout 45 minutes with her this morning. She ate well and even drank a little. She is one of my most docile hens. When I go to the coop she like to get on my back. She evens preens my hair. (Picking at the gray ones). The first time she did this to my hubby. He freaked out. I thought it was funny.

On the my hatch last year i posted on here and questioned everything the hen did, i might aswell have asked "Is it ok for the hen to move?"

Well, I took the last egg out of the nest when Momma got up to eat, said a little prayer for it and placed it gently into the compost bin.

It will nourish the garden this spring. It's 13 out today here and we're expecting a Nor'Easter to dump several feet of snow on us in the next 2 days.

On an up note, Momma hopped out of the nest and started calling for the babies to follow her. They were so cute!! Will post pics later.

Good for you, now the momma can focus on her clutch. Can't wait to see the pics!
