Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Hey guys I just candled my day 14 barred rock eggs but I wasn't sure what I was looking for exactly. In all four I could see dark masses which I assume are the chicks and good air cells in the wider part of the egg. In one I could see lots of veining but in the others I couldn't. Which one is good or bad? Or could my poor light be the reason I didn't see any?

Debs55--I could only see the dark masses & good air cells in my eggs too. 4 of the 6 eggs hatched after I was convinced that nothing was going to hatch. Good Luck!

I have another pipped egg. Here Is baby #1

Hey Stony,

Have you had any of your hens make a nest out where they are only protected by brush and have it snow on them?

I think I have a broody but the freeway got shut down yesterday and today because of a snow storm. I was going to go up there on Wednesday to check on her and build her a shelter of sorts. If she is broody she is under a table in the Coop area but it is completely open over head for the snow to come down. The roost areas are covered.

I cant get up there now till Saturday.... She is a Welsummer.

sigh
