Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Hey guys so I generally don't candle the eggs my Broodies are on but in this heat I want to check them so I can hopefully get any before they explode. How do you do this without the broody totally freaking out? I can't decide if I should take her off the nest or just reach under her and take them out one by one and mark the ones I checked? Do you have any preferences?
We ususally remove the hen from the nest and put her out to do her scratching and dusting. They usually sit on the floor for a minute or two and then run outside. But doing it this way means you about need two people because to get it dark enough to candle you need someone to hold a towel up to block light so it is dark enough to see.

Option 2 (which we've also done without trouble) is to wait till later at night after it is fully dark and the hen house is quiet. Then just slip them out from under her one or two at a time and check them. Just mark them as they are checked.

Either way would work, deciding factor would be your hen's personality and your coop set up.

I put 10 eggs under my broody silkie cross last year. That was my first time hatching anything. /img/smilies/love.gif

It was such fun that I have just ordered 10 Buff Sussex eggs for her. They should be here by Wednesday. Can't WAIT!!!! /img/smilies/jumpy.gif

Has anyone tried leaving their broody hen with the flock? I would be worried that the other birds might kill the little chicks. I'd love to hear! /img/smilies/thumbsup.gif

I have a Broody hen with 5 newly hatched chicks! I have left her and the chicks in a smaller coop with run (locked in) which is inside my big chicken run! This has worked well so far as all the chickens can see each other and know the chicks are there but aren't able to get in with them! It's just my way of slowly integrating all of them together :)

I've left my broody girls right in the nest boxes with mixed results. Topsy & Vanilla Ice (both bantam size) managed to co hatch a clutch of silky chicks without problems. My Maran Bunny however either crushed, or allowed others to crush, all of her eggs. Ended up getting her some chicks.

My latest set of broodies are bantam sized and hanging out on the coop floor. They're down to 2 out of 5 eggs. Possibly the eggs were bad, don't know.

But I have left all broodies and chicks in the coop with the flock whether I wired off a section or not. No one has bothered the chicks.

This morning it's 40*F out and my 18 day old chicks don't mind a bit! Mama is right there with them and they're not separate from the rest of the flock. Mama is protective and so it the rooster. If I was brooding them myself they'd still be under a lamp! I love letting Mama do the work. I tossed in some warm scrambled eggs (after giving some to my two broodies hens) and they all had a blast running around treasure hunting outside. The sun is warming things up nicely.I can see why chicks raised in the flock feather out faster--they are much hardier than I thought they would be!

I have a mama with 4 chicks hatched and 8 eggs left... I really don't want to mess with her, but she's in an upper nesting box, and I'm worried about the babies needing food and water.. Should I move her and chicks and unhatched eggs to a low box? How long before chicks need food and water?

4 weeks old now! :)
