Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Hi everyone, I have a question - I have two bantam hens that are sharing the same nest box/clutch of eggs. Nina, the first hen to go broody, is a small English game looking mix who is on the bottom of the pecking order in my 5 hen/1 rooster bantam flock and is usually chased and pecked by the other hens. Patti, the second broody decided to join Nina on the eggs several days after I gave Nina a clutch of 8 bantam eggs to hatch. The problem is that Patti is a larger Golden Seabright hen who is normally one of Nina's biggest tormenters! Strangely, they are sharing the nest box peacefully for now, but the eggs are due to hatch next week and I am worried that once the chicks hatch the hens will fight and maybe hurt the chicks! Should I try to separate them and give them each half of the eggs? Or should I leave them together and keep an eye on them and hope for the best?

Hi, I had two hens share a nest and hatch eggs together. One was an OEG standard hen and the other was a Cochin Banty. They shared the chicks nicely for a week until my poor OEG was killed by a dog. They were best friends though... My guess is that if they don't fight in the nest, or if you try to seperate them they go right back to each other, it's worth a shot letting them raise the clutch together. If there are problems, divide the chicks between them and keep them apart for a while.

Picked up a free broody today. Lady said she's never been a good layer, but always tries to go broody. Has been trying for a week or more to go broody. She's a barred mix, so we will see if she goes back to sitting for me! If so, I've got chicks with her name!

I'm really hoping that will be her job! I need broodies for my breeding project because I really don't want to incubate lol

I have a d'uccle hen sitting on 6 eggs for a week. tonight I went to candle and found an egg that wasn't marked. I thought good. Unfortunately, I found one in the house that was marked. I hope I didn't kill it since it would have been in an 80 deg. A/C house for about 4 hours and rinsed off. I guess it doesn't do much good to mark the eggs if you don't actually look at the entire egg for the mark. LOL
