Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I have a d'uccle hen sitting on 6 eggs for a week. tonight I went to candle and found an egg that wasn't marked. I thought good. Unfortunately, I found one in the house that was marked. I hope I didn't kill it since it would have been in an 80 deg. A/C house for about 4 hours and rinsed off. I guess it doesn't do much good to mark the eggs if you don't actually look at the entire egg for the mark. LOL
Rather than just marking them with a number or date try drawing a line the whole way around the egg. It should also help prevent marks from being rubbed off. You can still number them for tracking purposes, but the line will show no matter how the egg is laying in the nest.

I know it's hard but I wait until day 18, lock down and candle then. We have dark brown eggs and they can be hard to read so I just wait. Never any problem with rotten eggs so far.I added some different fake eggs the other night and she took them and she stole her sisters egg. She is a broody Mongo breaking eggs, Jersey Giants are big girls. All the hay I gave her she kicked it out. I would rather she sit on fake eggs and stop breaking the real ones.

My first broody with her first chick! She is such a good mommy! She refuses to even get up at all now that one baby has hatched. I guess this is because she is waiting for the other eggs to hatch? One bantam egg hatched and she has one more bantam and one LF egg to hatch yet. I put them in one day apart. So the others should hatch today?

Please tell me she is joking! 3rd time this year!! I will probably have to let her hatch out because it was my fault she isnt the one bringing up the chick this time!
