Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Our buff orp just hatched her first clutch and she's proving to be an excellent mother. If you go with a buff orp for a broody, I think you'll be pleased.
That said, we have three buff orp hens and only one has decided to be a mom. The other two are acting as if there's no way they'd even consider it.

I have been told that Buff Orps are excellent broodies, but none of my three ever considered brooding. However, they were hatchery quality birds, very sweet hens but not at all typical conformation for the breed, and apparently also not typical brooding instinct. If you get good quality birds I'm sure you'd be pleased with them, as even the poor quality ones had a lot to offer.

Agreed. All four of my Buff Orps are hatchery birds. Sweet as pie, even the cock. My partner keeps remarking how beautiful he is, but he's got a black feather in his tail, and it's crooked. Not even close to breed standard. We're not unhappy with them, however. And this broody's worth the price of all of them!

They are great broodies. Its just the hatchery ones in the US etc have more leghorn in them to make it so they lay more. But good quality UK standard are great broodies and mothers. Mine are UK ones :)
