Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

One of the marans eggs is out. This came from a lighter chocolate egg, so may be a splash. Still nothing on the other 4. Because so many eggs dissapeared and broke/rotted a lot of these eggs had yolk on them which dried. I would pick most of it off, but now wondering if they're compromised. Today is only day 21, so I'll keep hoping.

I'm sorry to read about the little chick that didn't make it out

but very glad you have some other little peeps that did!
Good luck with the remaining four!!

Here is the little buff chick with thin brown stripes. Not sure what kind of mix this could be. I know ameracauna chicks have stripes, but I didn't have any colored eggs..hmmm....

Here is most of the crew so far. The little plain reddish buff one is very camera shy so I dont have any pictures of 'her' and the buff striped one is a bit shy as well.

The black and lavender chicks don't seem to mind the thousands of pictures I have taken so far

I think they are so sweet! I'm pretty sure they were the first to hatch so maybe just feeling a bit more confident.
Please excuse the weird look to Momma's eye in this picture.
As you can see, this little one has all black legs. I'm about to go try to google pictures of mixed breed chicks to see if I can figure out what I have.
I think it might just be the four for me. If so, this was a way worse hatch rate for me than my incubator hatch with shipped eggs. It was also a lot less work on my part, which is great with a one year old to attend to

I briefly candled the remaining eggs in the early evening yesterday, so it wasn't very dark....I thought I saw some movement on a few and maybe a few internal pips?? None of them had any odor to them yesterday.
Should I pull the eggs or wait for a bit more?

Does it have 5 toes? Are these your own eggs that hatched or did you get them from somewhere?
hmmm good question I will have to investigate and report back. These are eggs I purchased locally. She stated she had "sultans, silver spangled hamburg, frizzles, and a large variety of excellent layers but all crosses my roosters are nh reds and I also have white leghorns, Americaunas, Australlops, buff orphingtons, nh reds, Rhode Island reds, and barred rocks."

I asked for only the NH roo with assorted hen eggs, but no white eggs and no colored eggs. I posted this little chick over on the guess the breed forum to see if anyone could figure it out. I thought only Dorkings have five toes?
Any guesses?

It is probably a sultan cross. Feather feet are dominant, if either parent has them generally the chicks will as well. I only say a cross because I don't see evidence of a poofy head.

Oh, and silkies also have 5 toes. From the picture I don't see 5 toes, but I'm not there to actually see the chick. I'm guessing sultan cross just based on what you said the lady had.
