Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

well our bantum phoenix hen just went broody today. kinda surprised since she's a hatchery bird and is only 7 mo old. gave her a few eggs to see how she does. hopefully she'll stick it out.

Our bantam phoenix are about 7-8 months old too. I was not expecting them to go broody at all but one of them did and her chicks are 1.5 weeks old now and she is doing great with them. 4 bantam phoenix chicks and 2 buff orpington. Hope yours work out well.

I'd love to see pics of both your hens & the chicks that are here already because as far as I'm aware we don't have bantam phoenix over here (Australia) and very few phoenix at all.

So excited only 1 more week to go!!!!
2 of my 7 shipped eggs are developing nicely. The others didn't develop and one died around day 7.
This is a first time broody hatch for me and my mama hen. She's doing a great job! Can't wait to see the little ones!

Hi, I am new to hatching and all and I have a broody hen. She was sitting on 2 eggs and after some advice added the 9 I had in the incubator. Tried moving her from here to here to no avail and now it seems I have a second one.

The nesting box they are in is a communal one and they wont use any other so I will have to be sure I mark all eggs they are sitting on.

These two have been sitting for 2 days but I keep stealing there eggs LOL and they are still at it, although one ran off and then came back. They even sleep there with no eggs. I might add another 9 so they will both have 10 each and hopefully they don't cause too much fuss. Can anyone tell me if it is safe to do so during the day (it is now 3.15pm) or wait until it is dark?

The other thing I am not sure of is that the chicken coop isn't exactly baby friendly LOL may have to take them off her and put in brooder when they hatch as, as you can see here the coop has pallets for a base that they would fall through

Well 8wks since she hatched ducks my N.H.broody is back on the nest again. She has eight eggs that are N.H., crossed with Buff Orphington and Ancona.

Just candled my 3 day old eggs under my 2 broodies and found stleast 2 viable. Hopefully the other 18 are viable.

My plan for hatching in the fall so that they would be breeding age in the spring may have gotten a bit out of hand. I just broody hatched the 5 paint chicks, that weren't marked so I ordered another 'batch' from another breeder that she is shipping to me tomorrow. Thankfully my blue hen went broody two days ago so I have a 'hencubator' available. I also have a broody due to hatch her eggs next week, that were just my flock eggs because I didn't have enough paint eggs the first time. I have a den full of rubbermaid totes with broodies in them. I also think this is our last nice day before it gets colder so they may be inside for the long haul. LOL working on broody time is complicated. I was just told by the breeder I'm getting the paint eggs this time from that I am getting a chocolate silkie egg! That is exciting to me.
