Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

When I checked my broody this morning, I saw an egg shell, and then...... PEEPING!!!

I can only get a pic of the broody, I took out the divider from the nest box and put some water in there. She took a drink right away and then promptly got back on her nest before I had time to grab a camera. She has two dried chicks, and one looked like it was zipping, I think. One chick had fallen out yesterday and it died. But even if we only get two live ones, I will be happy. She has done such a good job for her first time. :D

Be sure to post pics when you can :D

I too love hatch day and the little fluffy beaks. What a great Christmas gift for your family.

Sorry to hear about the lost one, but it is great that you have 2 out and going good so far!!!   I'm sure you will get to see them soon...

I can't get over how teeny they are! They are much smaller than my "day old" LF I received from the feed store. I can't wait to see the rest!! Percent if she only has two, I'm very impressed!

So I just checked on my broody, and found her sister sitting in the box with her again. :barnie. There was a two-three inch gap at the top and I think she hopped through it.

Do you guys think it's a good idea for me to bring my broody and her chicks in the house? I have a nice large cage that would be perfect. I hate to separate the chicken from the others, but she is higher on the pecking order. And I like the idea of the chicks being raised outdoors, where they can build up a cold hardiness. Any opinions?
