Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Not much has changed. Cookie is happily sitting on her eggs. Seems very determined.

It was 17'F this morning, so it can't be much fun. Two more weeks to go. (Actually, her orig stolen eggs will hatch sooner, but we swapped those out to add DD's experimental eggs. The stolen eggs are in the incubator. Another incubator is set up for the rest of DDs experimental eggs. It's going to be a chick overload in 2 weeks!

I'm so glad you got a broody so your daughter could do her 4H project.

Please let us know how her results come out!

I also love the rainbow egg assortment. Last year the kids & I bought stickers for our eggs. Each egg was a masterpiece & I didn't have to worry about dye spills or purple fingers on Easter morning.

Love it! How pretty (and healthy)....I started a "natural" Easter basket thread here...your post would be a wonderful additon...I'd love to see the pretty ideas people come up with their naturally (hen) colored Easter eggs. :D

As of last night my broody Storm had 3 out of 4 chicks hatch and was still sitting so I'm hoping for 100% by the time I get home today. So far she has a splash, a red and a cuckoo (all orpingtons) and I'm hoping the other red will hatch as well. This is her second brood and she is still under 10 months old.

Twin #1 is still sitting strong with 4 days left; not sure how many of her eggs are going since I haven't been able to candle but I'm hoping she gets few.

And Twin #2, Sky and Jasmine have taken to playing musical eggs in another nest but since they are always covered and are on days 13, 9 and 4 I just keep sorting them out when I check for extras.

I will try and get some pictures tonight.

Wow 2nd brood?! Mine tried once failed then 3 months later hatched 9/10. I know she's a strong broody she stayed with them almost intel week 8 and laid eggs during. Congratulations ! I love the new baby chicks ! Let's see some pictures

My BCM goes broody twice a year. She will lay eggs for about 2 months (roughly 40 eggs or so), sits for almost a month, then raises her chicks for about 9 weeks. Four to six weeks later she starts laying again and the process starts all over. I know some hens are different though. This girl really spends a lot of time with her chicks. My other broody left her chicks at 5 weeks and laid an egg the next day. She has not gone broody again, and I hope she doesn't. She was not the best mother.
