Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

This is Phoenix sitting on her first clutch of eggs. She is a wonderful broody. She doesn't attack me when I touch her or the eggs, I can move her anywhere and she will absolutely not leave those eggs. I do have to hand feed her because of that, but I'm willing to do that.

That blue Orpington rooster is Lancelot, who may be the father of one of two of the eggs. He died two days ago, due to sour crop. I'm hoping to get one chick from him, so his legacy and go on.

The other daddy is a Red Sex Linked, so maybe Ill get some white peeps.

The mothers could be-
Easter Egger (Her egg was one of the good ones)
Red sex linked
GLW
Speckled Sussex
Buff Orpington
New Hampshire red
Lavender Orpington


Anyway, I put 9 eggs under miss Phoenix. It's her first clutch, and mine.

Two got cracked (both were thankfully unfertile) and one I had to chuck because when I candled today, it looked unfertile and what looked like the yolk was freely floating around w/ no veins. 3 of them I saw good air sacks, and embryo mass, but since they were a bit dirty and were speckled, I couldn't see veins. I wrote a "?" on them and stuck them back under her. The other 3 were perfect. Excellent air sacks, prominent veins and little (and very active) embryos.

I'm hoping I get some chicks! They are due June 18th

GL with the hatch... fingers crossed that you get one from Lancelot. Sorry you lost him.

Well, they hatched together and are from the same parents. They look so much alike that I can't tell them apart.

Still cute ... I now have 4 sistes from the same mom(shes the actual biological and beoody mom) sitting 2 in tow boxes... And already another one of their sisters has 2weeks old chicks... I was planning on goving them eggs all four at once but then i decided not to(we can't handle all that at the moment)....
Their mom hatched 15 of her own eggs last year and here they are just like mommy...

Crazy Cookie Update.
On April 12, Cookie (our only bantam) hatched some English Orps & Bielefelders After taking good care of those chicks for 3 weeks, she started laying eggs. The night after she made the 1st egg, she slept on the roost while the little chicks stayed in the nest. In her defense, the chicks were 3/4 the size to our tiny Cookie.

The chicks are now 7.5 weeks old & bigger than she is. Cookie hasn't missed a day since she started laying a few weeks ago. Last night & all day today, she been in the nesting box. Could she seriously be going broody? We've been collecting all the eggs, so she's only sitting on a golf ball. Should I try to give her a cold bath? I'd love another round of chicks, but I'm not sure if it's healthy for Cookie to be a mom again so soon. Any advice?

It sounds about right if you have a frequent broody... i have a couple we can about mark on the calendar for when you gather eggs for their next set! LOL

As long as her activity level and weight had been back to normal since her last hatch she should be fine.
