Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Haha. I mean by the next time she goes broody again might not be for awhile. It's beautiful spring here in west TN, in the 70s this week. The dogwoods are in full bloom. There were only a handful of days where temps were above 100, but the shop is metal and gets hot, so I wouldn't want to put the hen in there then. I love it here and I came from CA last year. I'm sure y'all will too.

Yeah! Seriously, my wife is in TN right now looking at real estate.

I know. I may send them to someone with an incubator tomorrow. My hen was back playing at being broody at lunch. I came home to check her. I might just make her up a nest, collect more eggs from my silkies, move her onto it and cross my fingers. If she doesn't stick... well my silkies will lay more eggs. I've just never gotten this many silkie eggs at once. They're laying an egg a day between the both of them... and eating oyster shell like it's going out of style.

Thanks everyone.

I did open three of them. Two were full of thin dark putrid liquid and one was yellow and thick. No chickes that i could make out. I didnt open the last two. Out of thirteen only five were left. I suspect as you said that she pushed and pulled untill all of them were out in the cold at some point. So i know not to let her sit on that many again. I feel bad that i didnt know better.

I just moved three eggs under a broody today. She became broody yesterday morning. The three eggs were in the incubator and are on day 10. Will there be a problem if they hatch in 11 days? Could she reject them? She was broody last year in July and was a terrific mom. She took care of her chicks for 16 weeks.
