pontoosuc I did just what Miss Lydia said. I wait until the chicks hatch, then move them all to the floor in a nest. I'm going to have to do this again next week. A hatch coming, and mama is nesting 18 inches off the floor.
I had a similar question.. my broody is not segregated from the rest of the coop/birds because she's in her special spot under the nesting boxes, where no other chicken lays. It's on the floor, so no problems if she actually hatches something. No one seems to be bothering her. Should I move her if she actually looks like she might hatch something or is it likely she can protect the chicks if she hatches them there? I figure chickens have been doing this a while, so I was just assuming I'd leave her there - but it seems most people put them in a kitty cage or a special box to protect the babies.
She did get up, dustbathe, eat, poop and drink like she just crossed the desert today.. then back to the nest.
fetherz, all my broodies have hatched in the main coop but 2 and they have done fine, noone has picked on the hens or their chicks I am amazed at how well they are all doing. so it's up to you really. More than likely as soon as you let her out she'll bring them into the coop anyway, they did it here.
heres is the newest member of our family, hatched on Thurs. an only child
