What a great name you have. Great minds think alike
This is the best hatch along I have belonged to yet. I will need another broody after our chicks hatch.
This is a bit graphic but it is what I found on my poop board today. Obviously an embryo chick. I have no idea who this came from. I had a chicken with a problem a week ago.........soft egg intact first, then she got sick and had watery and white membrane like poops and she was off her food and water. I gave her electrolyte water and tried to get her to eat something and kept her in the house for one night. The next morning ,I expected to find her dead but she was better and I continued the electrolites and put her back with the flock. She has recovered and is eating and drinking and back to her old self except for laying. She has not produced and egg since her illness. Could this embryo chick have anything to do with her?? She was not broody nor do i think that she had fertilized eggs. I thought an egg had probably broken inside of her but where would an embryo chick come from anyway?
I have a broody sitting on 3 eggs now and they are all viable. The hen that laid the eggs she is sitting on wants to sit on them also so I guess I have to separate the broody who seems more serious about it even though they are not hers. There are only two chickens that I have seen my silkie roo breed. I really do not think he gets the standards or the bantam cochins but I'm not sure about that. Anyway, this is a long post and I would be interested to see if anyone has any suggestions about where the embryo came from. There are no place to hide eggs as they are cooped and penned and I clean every day and look everywhere.
Another surprise I got today was 1 cracked egg under my broody leaving her with 3. I took the egg in the house and opened it as it has been sat on for 5 days and wondered what it would look like. I thought some other folks would like to see what an 5day brooded egg looked like since I opened it. So here it is!
Hope the rest of the day goes better!!

What an interesting day for you. I will admitt that the 5 day brooded egg is a great learning experience, thanks for the pic. That other stuff is a totat science experiment gone weird

Oh Miss Lydia, I would love some ducks but NC is too far to drive for that! Unfortunately! I am trying to convince DH to make me a pond so I can have some and enjoy them! We have the land...he doesn't have the energy! Another thing added to my "someday I'll get to" list!!!
I went out after church to check on Cinderella. Her feed bowl was almost empty so sometime between yesterday morning and now, she ate a bunch. No poo though! I gently lifted her chest off the eggs and saw 3 pipping!!!
Can you tell I am excited!!! I didn't look or disturb her enough to check the others (8 others) so will have to wait (impatiently, of course!!!)
Told the kids and they are SUPER
excited!!! Hoping to post a photo or 2 in a day or so!!!

Wow Chicklette...that is very interesting!!! I thank you for both photos. This is why I love this forum! So much to learn! My friends call me the Chicken Whisperer and joke about all the time I spend learning here! But they just don't know what they are missing!!!! Now I have something else to tell them today when we all get together. I believe in spreading the learning experience!!!
I can't wait to read what some of the others have to say about the embryo.
Chickette...take the quite boring while you can and appreciate it! Some of the things I have read others go through makes me quite happy for boring!
