Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

2 of my Seramas are finally sitting. The one is sitting on 12 eggs from all four of my hens and the other I seperated and she is sitting on six of her own. It has been about a week now I hope they are able to hatch some little ones. The 12 I had in the incubator did not hatch after 28 days I gave up on them. They had partially form chicks in them . I hope letting mom take care of them works better.

I got a baby!!! Today is day 20 (day 21 begins at 6pm tonight) and although I can't see anything because I don't want to move my broody, I could here activity under her. Of course this got me really excited and impatient so I kinda nudged her a bit to force her to adjust and I heard a clear and loud peeping!!!

It sounded like only one chick and I really want to get under her and look, but I'm going to leave her alone for a bit longer.

Wow...I never would have thought that broodiness is contagious. We have one broody laying on nine eggs and now all of a sudden we have two more, but we are preventing them from going any further than 1 day of broodiness.

On another interesting note, I have noticed that our main broody hen will eat/drink/go to the bathroom in the morning, but she will also lay an egg during the day and sacrifice it for her own to eat. And it is always one that I have not marked. She is one smart cookie to keep her protein and energy level up.

This morning I will candle a couple of the eggs to know how far long she is. How exciting!!!!

Two hens sitting on 4 eggs. Two eggs are due to hatch tomorrow and one the next day and one on the 21st. They are in the nest in the coop with all the other hens so this should be interesting. I plan on removing the chicks to a brooder when they hatch. Is that OK?

It's okay but you'll have 2 very unhappy mama hens, is there a reason your moving them? they will be fine in the coop with the rest of the chickens if thats a worry.
