Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

So it sounds like you are all at the hatching stage and I am just starting....story of my life...late for all the good things.
I have learned alot reading many of the posts although I must say that over 2000 lends for some skimming.
I thoguht that by having eggs under a broody that I would be less obsessive than with the incubator...but NOOOOOO!!!!
I am now just staring at the poor little hen rather than eggs through the incubator....and we are day 1!!!! My husband came out to the coop today to ask if I would like him to build me a bunk (should have said yes).
Is this normal?????

and if not is it okay???

I keep opening the door seeing if she is still there. Yep, still pancaked out, annoyed with the humans with zero hatching experience. Going into day 5 now!
She knocked an egg out for the third time so I got rid of it. Figured there were just too many under her little flat body.
You're right though, 2000+ posts are hard to take in.

Three broodies hatching as I type. And guess what -- 3 new broodies. I have now lost count of how many broodies this year.
I am only going to have 1 of the 3 broodies rear this batch of chicks. I think I will do the same for the 3 new broodies (with only a few eggs under each this time instead of my usual dozen or more).

I know how to break a broody, but, since one of my breeding goals is for broody lines (Jersey Giant, Easter eggers, white/light egg layer mixes, dark/olive egg mixes) , I just can't bring myself to do that. Besides, I need to cull out bad broodies.

good idea, but how will you cull out bad broody's if you don't let them raise their chicks? Part of being a broody is teaching the little ones how to be chickens. Being a broody is more than just hatching eggs. Besides, if you take chicks from 2 of them, I bet those 2 go broody again really quick. Food for thought.....
