Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

The babies are Wyandotte and Delaware mixes.

She was SOOO protective at first, but now they are only 3 weeks old and doing their own thing and she doesn't seem to think they need her anymore. BUT THEY ARE ONLY 3 WEEKS OLD! So I am worried about them.

There are three babies so far I think another is in the process of hatching.

The mama hen took a dust bath and now they are all back under her in the pet crate.

I am so sorry your chick died, I wish I was close to you I have lots of fertile eggs

She might not have done anything, it just might have not been strong enough to survive. Anyway so sorry,

I had 2 mamas leave their chicks at 3 weeks, I thought it a might early also. They will not sit next year. The chicks are doing really well though they have been hanging out with the older chicks, then my Bantan cochin frizzle kept hers for 10 weeks. and my other bantan cochin still has hers and she is 6 weeks old, she only has the one though so guess that could make a difference too, both of these 2 timers. Hope your chicks will be fine.

I'm getting so nervous. I candled Gwen's eggs last night and only 2 (maybe 3) of the five she had left looked viable. I chucked the two that were obviously duds. I'm thinking of a plan B of some day-old chicks if the remainders don't hatch.

With so many duds, I wonder if my roo isn't doing a good job or if first-time-mama Gwen let some of them get too cool or something.
