Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I am very new to keeping chickens having only had them since early this year. I have a rather ecletic mix of 12 hens and one cockerel ranging from 15wks up to over a year.
I have two Pekin/cochin Bantams that are last years stock (or so I was told, they could be much older

and my cockerel is also a pekin, and of the same vintage.
I noticed little Bill (the cockerel) didn't seem to crow alot, definately not every day, and wondered whether it had something to do with him not bein at the top of the pecking order in this little bantam trio. The dominant hen was definately boss.
So after a few months of very little crowing, or even mating (what more could a young stud want then to be thrown in a pen with two lovely ladies?), I desided to move him out of the breeding pen and threw him in with my mixed LF flock. He loved it. A changed cockerel indeed. So his not quite boss, as I have one hen who has spurs and is very good at fighting, but is second in line, and has 6 lovely ladies below him. He has started to crow again, and has to work extra hard to mount the big girls, so he is a happy chappy.

Now more curiously. The day after I moved Bill out of the pen with his two Pekin girlies, one of them went broody. She would puff up and shriek at me if I put my hand anywhere near her. The next day I went to collect eggs and lifted the lid of the nest box to find two hens in two nests, puffing up and shrieking at me!
I watched them closely for a week to see how serious they were, and one hen was very hard core and never seemed to eat or drink and the other would only move first thing in the morning, ate, drank, quick dust bath, back on nest withing 10-15min. They did swap nests once in the week also, I think this is why one doesn't move anymore lol

So I went on ebay to find some hatching eggs, as the eggs the broodies were on could only have been laid after the removal of Bill (my local chicken breeder had no hatching eggs as her chickens were moulting). I bought a dozen hybrid hen eggs as I figured I could do with some more laying hens, and as this was my first time with chicks, I thought they might be more sturdy then little bantam babies.
When I went to set the eggs two days later in the dark, I was expecting to find lots of eggs under the two broodies. I lifted one up, the one that had gone broody first, and she was sitting on absoloutly nothing. I slid my hand under the second girl, and pulled out just one little egg. It was white so wasn't even her egg! So what seems to have happened was one girl laid and egg after Bills departure and desided to sit on it and instantly went broody. Then for some reason (probably because of the piece and quiet without Bill stiring up the nests), the other hen had gone broody before she had even laid an egg (and these two girls were laying 6 eggs a week before), and therefore sat on nothing. Now at some point when the first broody had got up to eat, the second one had stollen her nest with the one egg in it, leaving the first broody to sit on her empty nest. That first broody doesn't move anymore.

Anyhow, the eggs are set, under two very very dedicated broodies. Bill the cockerel is getting better at crowing and mounting. And with any luck I shall have a few chiping chicks before the month is over. What a productive month

Hi there from me too!

It all sounds very complicated. But basically, in my experience, a hen will either be laying, moulting or broody, but no combinations.

Whatever happens, it will be a great adventure!

Ok so now I have fertile eggs and a broody hen how many eggs can a LF Brahma hen incubate? Not sure how many to let her have?...I have 24 Silkie eggs...She is very broody sitting in her box...If I lift her out of the nest she just stays in the same position on the floor of the brooder box with her wings spread out a bit and her feathers poofed out!...Then back in the box she goes!

Well first time broody and it's day 20 . I expect chicks soon I have not seen her get off the nest at all. I made a nest box 14" x 21" and moved her and the eggs at day 2. In the middle of the day, that was befor I started reading this thread lol. Lucky she was very dedicated to the job at hand. But I did have to force her back into the box after putting her in there 2 times she stayed , it took about ten min. Then she never came out. Well I left the box on the floor in the main coop with all the adult chickens I faced the box into a larg dog cage maybe 40"x30" x24" high. It has water and chick food in it the flock won't be able to get into the cage. How long do I need to keep them separated? , I also put more eggs under her for 2 days after see started sitting on them. ( again before I read this thread). What's your thoughts on that? She started sitting fri I noticed sat when I went to get eggs, she was still in the same spot she had not
Moved. Then I put eggs under her sun and mon. Adding to her batch oop's oh well live and Lern . I do have a Awsome incubator at what day would you move in hatched eggs to bator ? If she started setting on a Friday do you count that day for day one? Or would sat. Be day one ? Any advice would be great. Thanks

I confess I only read the first 10 pages. This is a great message thread, I will follow.

I have a couple questions...

I have 16 hens. One barred rock decided to go broody. I kicked her out of the nest boxes several times and she always went back so I figured she was determined. I have moved her to separate quarters and set her all up with golf balls. She stayed broody. I have no roosters so I ordered fertile eggs for her. By the time they arrived (late) she had already been sitting on golf balls for 2 weeks. Out of the 12 eggs I got there were only 5 I thought had a chance...most were just scrambled. She accepted those 5 with no problems. After about a week she kicked one out. It was getting stinky. These are marans eggs so it is really hard to see into them but I don't think that any of them are growing but she is sitting tight on them so I am just gonna let her go until next week when they are due to hatch.
Now my questions...lol sorry....

My question, if none of these eggs hatch can I put some more eggs under her? How long will a broody hen stay broody? I have a batch of ameraucana eggs in my incubator. I am not sure if I want to chance sticking one of these babies under her when they hatch. She is a sweet hen and lets me reach under her with out even a fuss. She just kinda clucks at me. So maybe she would accept babies easily.
So I am not sure if I should put more fertile eggs under her to sit on for another 3 weeks or try and give her a couple of chicks or try to shock her out of being broody with a bucket of ice water (lol). What should I do?? I don't want to wear the poor girl out.

I make sure she gets off the eggs once a day. She usually will do it herself in the mornings. I always give her a hard boiled egg. She only eats the yolk and drinks a little water then hops back on the eggs.

sigh what to do what to do...

Sat day 1, sounds like you have a good setup for them, she will probably stay on the eggs if you didn't add anymore after 2 days, they usually like to take the chicks out and about around day 3 of hatch, but with food and water close by hopefully she'll sit till all are hatched, after day 25 of last set eggs I'd remove unless she does it herself. She can take chicks around other members of flock anytime and will most likely, my last broody hatched hers in the coop with all her flock around her and has had them in there the whole time, Most flocks respect the mama and her chicks, they don't want to tangle with a broody. So good luck and keep us posted on how it goes..

I don't want to hog the show but looks like I'm the only one here for now so will answer your questions, For one I have experienced myself one of my broodys sitting on non viable eggs for the whoile 3 weeks, she still wanted to sit after taking these eggs, so i gave her 3 bantam eggs knowing for sure they were fertile. She sat for another 21 days and hatced 3 beautiful bantams, I made sure she had good protein, and alot of times had to make her get off for some exercise. but she did great. so hopefully yours will too. and people have had great sucsess with putting chicks under mama too, at night. So your decision. when are your eggs due to hatch in the bator? maybe just let her finish out that time?
