Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

When I went out at 8 to lock up Mama in the shed, The Black Broody was practically sitting on Mama's head, and not in the nest I made her. It was dark in the shed, so I grabbed my gloves, and moved her again to the nest. Closed the door quickly. So it was pitch black in there. Hopefully that will be enough to keep her on her own nest. I did however put her on 3 of "Lil Blues" eggs. So if she sits, it is for 21 days now.....

Unless "Lil Blue" gets her brood on quick like. Then I'll swap around eggs again. I'm like that....

Put another chick from my incubator under my broody , that's a total so far of 7 chicks over a 5 day period, wondering at what point will it be to late to add chicks under her she has excepted all so far but they are runing free with my reg flock, and I'm a little conserend about there safety. when I got home tonight the chicks were all outside the large dog cage , and mama hen was trapped inside all were fine but she would have a hard time protecting them from inside the cage! ! Anyway I got rid of the cage ,she went straight to scratching and feeding ,teaching the chicks it was fun to watch. Then a few min. Later they were all outside in the larg run with all the other chickens witch seem to have no problems with the chicks

. It was sweet , so my Question , will it be a problem with the newly hatched chicks to be in a regiment that includes going out side and such? Should I put them in a brooder first? . I'm so thankful that she has some chicks to raise she is really a fantastic mama hen so far.

well I think I had my 1st EVER successful broody move. All other times have failed miserably. The newest Black Broody Sumatra that I moved off of "Mama's" nest, and onto her own.... she got up and ate this morning, then went back to her nest. I was watching her, and she did look at "mama's" nest, but ultimately went back to her own. Hopefully her nest stealing is over....

Jumping in on this thread cuz I have to share my good news with someone. Did not post earlier cuz it was my first time with broodies and I did not want to get my hopes up. I have 6 birds that are broodie right now...all for the first time. They all went broody within a couple days of each other and are sitting on 4-5 eggs a piece. Only problem I have had to this point is that they are all in nest boxes. I did attempt to move them earlier this week and it was a fail.
Anyways....I went out to get eggs this morning, and as I was picking under my golden comet for misc eggs, a chick came out from under her wing. It was the cutest thing that I have ever seen. There are also a couple more eggs under her that were zipped.
I moved a long to a buff and noticed that she had one hatch, but she had pushed it out of the nest on to the floor. The chick was still alive, so I picked it up and put it back under mama. Guess it will be a wait and see now. There were also a couple more under the buff that were pipped.
Here is my question....do I now need to move the mama and babies to a floor location, or will they be able to get in and out of the nest box that is about a foot off the floor?
I will try to get a picture up soon. I went out to take it, and baby was hiding!
