My 2 clears were 25 days old when I tossed them. No explosions.

let us know how it went. My broody is being fairly nice so far too. I'm worried about her but I'm going to post a separate post about that...
You're only 2 days behind me on due dates. I think Niss is only a couple days ahead of me. I'm guessing you get to count today since you put them in an incubator all day. I'm not sure about that but I would guess it's the same.

As for the rooster...whoo wee. I just had to get rid of a cuckoo marans rooster about a month ago. He was the "twin" to my now broody. I haven't had much luck with the roosters. They all treated me okay but did NOT like my 9 yr old DD! She's out with the chickens most of the day. (Loves them, so much in fact that she's using this "broody time" to show me how responsible she can be with the chickens, hoping to earn the owners rights to a couple of the eggs if they hatch.

) Anyway, if that rooster even heard her voice he would run to find her. He flogged her once on the leg, leaving blood, and that was it for me! When I put him in a different pen he would fly at the run wire, face high to try and get her! Crazy and scary. I'm positive it wasn't anything she did, just being a kid. I never left her unattended with the roos so I know she was acting properly/gently/responsibly. It was just the way she moves, her high pitched voice, always wanting to be with the hens. I've read that roosters don't do well with kids because of all of those reasons and I sure saw it at my house. Good luck with yours and please be careful with your little guy. I'd love to have a roo for my flock but I'm VERY timid about it now.

Can you all talk me down?

I'm just really worried about my broody, Mona. I've never seen her get up voluntarily from her nest. She's been sitting for 9 days now, counting the "fake" days. I read all of these posts about the broodies getting up once a day, acting crazy, leaving these big smelly poops...not mine! She just sits and sits. Why?

Funny story: On Wed. my DD held a bowl of water up for her to drink and then hand fed her eggs out of another little bowl. She got tired of holding the bowl so she just propped it in the corner of the nest between the wall and Mona's breast. Later that night I asked her where the bowl was. She told me what she'd done so I asked her to go get it. She came back telling me it wasn't there anymore. I was busy so I didn't really pay attention. Next morning I go out to do a Mona check, remember about the bowl, and look for it. No bowl. ??? Later that afternoon I decide to scoot Mona off her nest, trying to get her to eat or drink something or just move a bit. What do I find underneath her, with one of the eggs in it? Yep, the bowl. I guess she's just so intent on sitting that anything that goes near her she's gonna scoop right under and sit on it too! Crazy bird.

P.S. Me scooting her off the nest didn't do a thing! She just puffed up in a squat and when I backed up she waddled back to the nest.

My girl didn't get off the nest for days at a time. Especially in the beginning and when I moved her. I did make sure food and water were within reach at all times. Neither went down very much but she did drink some water at least. I didn't worry about her. I figured she do what she needed to do. She looked fine. Just very flat. (If she isn't eating and drinking much - she really isn't going to have much need to come off the nest.)

Your turn with the big smelly poop WILL come!

When my broody wouldn't get off the nest I would pick her up and hand carry her away from the nest to where the dust bathing was going on, she would scream and holler but would actuallty spend some time dust bathing. eating drinking and puffing up before going back, and oh those broody poops too. I think by day 25 the eggs should probably be tossed. I never had any explode but a few came close phew!

ROFL yeah. I about puked when I had to break one open. It was a dud. I am hoping to do better next year but I just don't know with a blind roo if it will work out or not. He seems to be doing the job but I just don't know. Her eggs have been fertile before from him but she didn't sit on them long enough and they didn't make it all the way.
