Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

all of my broody's so far are free range. When my mom's main coon cat comes around mama (he only did this once this year) she tree'ed her 2 week old babies (they were 7 feet up a tree!) and attacked the cat. This is a cat that pounced on a Grouse once in front of me. He was absolutely terrified and ran away with his tail between his legs. He no longer comes around mama's with broody's!

Now next year I hope some of my penned Sumatra's go broody. They are from incubated eggs, but from hens who went broody this year. So I'm hopeful!

For some reason mamma hen doesn't sound alarm for the cat, even though she sees her. But the dogs...now that's a whole different story!! I'd think the cat would be the bigger threat, but she obviously doesn't agree!

Stony, how many broodys are you trying for next year

lol, it isn't up to me. It's up to my girls!

Stony: I'm thinking you must put something in your water! Lol! Well, if we add the number of broodies from this year for you to the number of Sumatra hens you said you have, it sounds like you might clear 20!!! Should we start taking bets now?

Okay I need help, Ms. Cruella hatched her chicks at the beginning of Sept. She lost all of them to hawks except one, Crybaby, a CX x D'Uccle mix. (hawk had expensive taste and ate all the blue marans), anyways she will not teach her baby to roost at night and she is still insisting on sleeping in the nesting boxes, which I have to clean out daily now. I tried everything, I blocked the nesting boxes, she slept on the floor with baby, placed her on the roost, she throw a fit and went around pecking everyone until they moved, then she continued to get in the nesting box. I put Crybaby on the roost and it was still their this morning, but Ms. Cruella NO she's in a nesting box. HELP what should I do? She's a very good mom but she won't cut the cord.
