I am so sorry you had to experience that, I had the same thing happen this past summer, all I could figure out was there must have been something wrong:hugs with the chicks, Needless to say I don't have the hen anymore. Again very sorry

As long as she can't leave the broody box yes you can move her. If she can get out she'll most likely go back to where she was sitting even if her eggs aren't there. or you can wait till chicks have hatched the first 24 hrs and move them all then. But it would probably be less stressful to move her now. Congrats and let us know how it goes, and pics we love pics.

Thank you, Miss Lydia! The kids and I worked all day on "fencing in" the broody coop and we moved Pip and her eleven eggs into her temporary home. Fortunately, I did build the broody coop with a locking door and she's locked up now. However, she hasn't sat on her clutch since we put her in there and that was about 5 hours ago. Is that a bad thing? It's rather warm out today but the eggs are cooling.

Should I be concerned? It's been 14 days since she started setting.

Bad news! On Monday, Pip "buried" all her eggs under the nest straw and pushed them into a corner of the broody coop then went about her normal chicken business. I had to throw all 11 eggs out. There was no movement at all. Shame. Seven of them were well-formed, too. My only guess as to what went wrong is that I moved her too late and the freeze we had over the weekend did the poor little chicks in.

This just doesn't seem like good broody time of year, hope things will start to look up in the spring.

I had my FIRST broody hen EVER did that. I managed to save most of the chicks (by stuffing them down my shirt and running like a maniac for the brooder - yeah, all I had on when I went to check on them were yoga pants and an athletic top. Fortunately one of those with the built in bras. Still, afraid I'd squish them!!) I am so sorry this happened to you!! Ours were perfectly healthy too. It is such a shocking act of senseless violence...

So sorry!

The only thing I can think is that she started pecking away at the one and then just got carried away... as cold as it is here the littles would have started yelling in the cold, the sounds maybe triggered the frenzy. She is an experienced broody her last clutch was 10 chicks!

I haven't stewed her... she actually looks a little apathetic; sorta lost out there.

My broody Barred Rock has been sitting on 8 eggs and this morning I saw one chick and heard lots of "chirping" coming from underneath her.......can't wait to get home tonight to see how many I have......
