Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

now that is funny! I baked it in the oven, with orange sauce glaze. Saving what is left for soup stock after we eat the next one.

Sounds yummy. I need to make chicken n' dumplings with a few of my roos, [the ones in the freezer] You might have a hard time getting your ferel roos to come down out of the tree to go into the freezer. We are talking about processing a few Muscovy drakes next season, not the 2 we have but let the girls hatch some, My DH said just don't name them.

if any of my Pekins go broody I will do the same to the drakes that hatch. No more male ducks! The ferrel roo's can't be caught....... just isn't happening. Ummmmm, dumplings..... I'm thinking the next little one will be pan fried, homemade biscuits, gravy, baked or mashed potatoes.

I would rather not have drakes either, but sure couldn't part with my boy from this year. His maybe daddy is going on 9 so don't know how much longer he'll be chasing the girls.

lol, I do like southern cooking! There is a little south in this yank! 9.... wow, your boy has led a nice life of chasing and caring for his girls!

Yes he has, he hurt his leg this past summer, I wasn't sure if he was going to recover or not, spent alot of time laying around and limping when he would walk, But he is doing much better now and maybe around next spring to Keep Opie on his toes.

well there is a little yank in this southern girl.

I worry everytime someone hurts their leg. Never a good thing in a bird. Glad he is doing well to show Opie the ropes! I know Sammy will run 50 yards to chase a young roo away from a hen that the youngin is pestering.

It is fun to watch the young boys try to fit in and learn the ropes....

the craziness seems to start in February here. As soon as the girls start laying after their monthish off, the boys start in.... then, LET THE BROODY'S BEGIN!

Baby #2 was hatched just prior to me getting ready for woek tonight! Small, black olive egger, YAY! I only had time to remove the discarded egg shell, check that the baby had 1 head, 2 wings, 2 legs, and no obvious deformities/issues before i had to go...tucked him/her back under Mom after i snapped a couple of fuzzy cell phone pics...will post better pics when i get home in the morning!

I have a BO that started setting on friday the 4th. AS of wednesday she had 16 eggs--now down to 15 --found one broken in her nest when she got up to eat. My daughter and I candled a few last night and saw movement in 3. I am just gonna wait and let mother nature take her course and see what hatches. None of them are stinky but I am sure there will be a few that don't hatch. One looked like a double yoker so I am assuming that those never turn into anything?!? I am excited to say the least--not knowing when she really turned her mommy cooker on I am just guessing within a few days of hatch--unlike filling an incubator and you know the hatch time.
