Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I went and bought 2 plastic containers and will turn them upside down with the lid as a floor and cut a door on one side and see if the girls like these to brood in. I only got 2 so it's kinda an experiment. I have a coop thats 3x4 and will separate down the middle and put them in there. That way they will have some privacy. Just hope not more than 2 go broody at the same time, cause i have a feeling these will be the favorites. I am going to wait a while though before I set them out. Our weather has been so crazy today I noticed the peach trees have buds... Oh my goodness not Yet!

Drill a few vent holes near the top so humid air can get out. I am thinking about doing something like this for my Guineas to lay in. Though I will have to make a hinged top on it. For egg gathering.

I have a few plastic pails that are lying on their sides. I put some shaving in them and the sumatra's like to lay in them. it might just work. I thought about lining the walls of the sumatra tin shed with these...just to see what happens

I've seen where people have used buckets laying on their sides for nest boxes you'd just have to put something across the bottom to keep the litter and eggs from tumbling out.

Stony, I had made you 54 (graying hair, crows feet, and all). Sorry. I bet your hot young wife is glad you set us all strait!

First chick has hatched! A second egg has a small pip in it, but I've not seen much activity in it today so I'm not sure if it'll hatch :/
But the chick that has hatched is so adorable! She (lets hope its a she, anyway) is a lovely grey, so she might grow up to be black like her mommy and daddy :) I'll try to take a photo tommorow-hopefully there'll be another hatched out in the morning as well!
