Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Right! I almost forgot about that. I am so worked up over the whole thing. I dont have kids of my own yet, so I think I am acting out over the whole thing... like if I dont do this right then I am going to be a horrible real mom or something... I am a bit neurotic if yall cant tell :)

It's okay, you can be as neurotic as you want on here because i think we all are over our animals, now my kids are adults so my chickens ducks dogs goose are my kids...

Sorry to hear that, but your going to get eggs for her to sit on right?

Yeah I am going to head up there in a bit to see if they are home. My husband is like, well just take her eggs and she will get over it. But dont they sit until something hatches?

It's okay my husband just looks at me and shakes his head.. don't wash those eggs just wipe them off the best you can, chicks hatch with poop on their shells you don't want to wash the protective bloom or cover off that is actually protecing the egg inside from bacteria.

I get the same looks from my wife.

Okay I have to be the worst candler ever, my broody got off long enough for me to take her 3 eggs on day 11 and candle, I am pretty sure i saw veing in 1 but the other 2 looked like a dark mass, well the 1 i saw some veining had a dark mass also, so are they good?

sounds good!

All my eggs turned out to be duds :(

I got 6 eggs from our farmer friend so now we are on Day 1 starting over. I think I will be less crazy about these since it is about a 95% sure thing that these are fertile. I did find out that my little man Nugget (a buff rooster who is about 9 lbs now) is sick though :( . Luckily Mr. Paul is taking good care of him.

Now let her take control. Believe me I KNOW it is hard! I am a control freak so I constantly want to do something, but I cant! Hopefully in 21 days you will have little chicks running around. I have to keep my mind off that part or I get waay to excited!

Thank goodness I have 2 little ducklings to keep my busy for the time being. ;)

Good luck to you and your broody!
