Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

It's possible - leave them and let the mommas hatch them. You may just not hear anything. I didn't hear a peep out of Smokey's babies that hatched. I heard lots of peeping from the ones in the bator that didn't make it.

Went in when hubby got home. We got the one dead chick out. Didn't find any other chicks so was I hearing them in their shells? We lifted all the mommas (they were so not helpful) and couldn't see any pips but we didn't have the best light. Couldn't hear anymore peeping so I hope they are just sleeping and hatching tomorrow.

Good morning everyone! My broody Gracie has hatch 3 out of 4 eggs so far! The 4th one is blue egg it feels heavy so Im hoping it will hatch because the babies are not going to want to stay in that nest for long. Lol 2 RIR EE mixes and one little black that I have no idea where he came from. LOL

So sorry about the loss of the chicks/washed eggs. Unfortunately we learn some lessons the hard way at least those are the ones we tend not to repeat. I won't ever put food coloring in my bator water wells again unless I want dyed chicks. Glad she has some babies to be a mom to - that will help her through the broody stage.

She brought her three babies outside today for the first time. I need to make a broody enclosure. They can get through the fencing I have now

Thank you. Yes. Definitely learned something! I am donating 36 hatching eggs to a daycare for them to hatch, and she is going to give me some back as well. I was so stressed and grumpy the last week. I worried about them not hatching because of the washing thing, and now that they are gone, I feel better. Janet is happy with her adopted children. At least she does not have to brood them as long as day olds. They were 2 weeks old to the day when I placed them in her crate.

She took them outside yesterday. I was a wreck! We are going to make them a safe little area where they can't get through fencing or run too far for us to round them back up. Right now they are living in our mud room with mama, as I am not willing to make a safe place inside the barn. We are moving in 3 weeks, and it's just too much to do before that time. They will have their own place when we get to the new house, which I can not wait for!

Her chicks are really ballsy! I saw one chase my cat. My cat is such a sissy. He is terrified of the chicks/chickens

I wish my cat was afraid of my chicks!! LOL I lost one last year to her. From now on the cat is not allowed anywhere near the area where chicks are. Luckily with momma as their protector I wont have to worry about it too much.
