Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Thank you

All seems quiet and well here. The cockerel goes next week, and Hermione isn't moving off those eggs for anything. Her blue marans arrive on Wednesday!!!

I didn't want to - but I got rid of my two LF roosters and only kept the silkie roo. Things have definitely quieted down around the yard and everyone seems happier somehow. Hope things go well with your new babies!

Well it took awhile but here they are "Hens and Kittens"

The Black Star hen is still laying in with the kittens, the Welsumer hen got booted by a Cuckoo Maran and now one of the free ranger Black Star hens thinks she wants a nest box of her own too. This place is like " One flew over the Cuckoo's nest" these days.
Adorable! Combines two of my favorite C words, cats and chickens. Now if you just had some children in there my favorite Cs would be complete :)

I think my EE Smokey is trying to lay me an Easter egg today, but she's forgotten how to get into the nest boxes :)
Not surprizing since the last time she laid an egg before going broody was January 31st and that was only her 22nd egg ever.

That is precious..

Yes! She laid a beautiful green/blue egg - here's my basket with White Leghorn, Silkie and Smokey's EE egg for today. Oh how I missed those beautiful green/blue eggs.
I'm still waiting for the 4 Lavender Orpingtons to lay their beautiful brown eggs.

But I'm worried that she is going broody again

- after getting in/out of the nest box several times she finally hid down in the corner of the coop to lay the egg and was tossing shavings on her back to cover herself up. When I went back out to gather eggs I just took it out from underneath her because she was sitting on it and keeping it warm. She stayed still as I petted her and she continued to toss shavings on her back as she walked away from where she had laid the egg.

Oh, no! I don't need any more chicks right now!

Congrats on the babies! Pics please! Yes, Smokey is the only one I have that has gone broody and now she's acting like she wants to do it again.

I don't know. I'm looking at my current flock and trying to decide what to do. Which of the new roosters will be rehomed and whether to keep any. I'm not sure if the AM Smokey hatched is a pullet or roo, and I may not know for another 12+ weeks. It's looking like pullet for now so that's good. Of the other 2 10 week old EE/WL mixes, one is definitely a roo and the other possibly a pullet. But I'm very disappointed my two Wellies are Roos so I may get some more wellie eggs and try again for pullets. If I do I will only get half a dozen so she's not sitting on too many. She did a great job last time. I miss her eggs when they aren't around. They're so pretty. My experience with hatching silkies was I had 30+ shipped silkie eggs to hatch and ended up with only 3 chicks. My pullet Topsy and rooster Davy are still here. The other rooster died over Christmas vacation. They are very cute. My son wants more silkies. I would like to have a few. I got them to hatch out to be broodies. Of course that was before we found one was a rooster.
