Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

a couple of broody pics from this morning. After the chaos settled. With 3 Blue Sumatra broody's in one building, mornings get crazy! Mama and daughter have their lil ones, and another blue is hatching. It was complete broody craziness for a few minutes.

If you've had a bit of colder weather - that can make the hatch take longer. Hang in there. You can check the eggs again and see if they are still growing. If they're about to hatch you may even hear some peeps coming from them.

Yes, we candled last week, took 4 away that were not developing and left her with five. Three for sure were growing and in the other two we couldn't see through the shell very well, so we let her keep those just in case. This is our first time with a broody and I have to say I have never been this impatient!

Well, my NN broody has four chicks I think (including squashy, who is still alive and kicking and now under mommy), my orange mystery chicken has at least two. I may have 100% hatch on my seven backup incubator eggs so they'll get those tonight too. I think I'll only give the NN two more - they have fewer feathers, maybe she can't cover as many?

Guess what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AFTER A MONTH LONG WAIT!!! Henrietta stayed on the nest ALL night!!

She only got up twice yesterday and I could tell she was getting in the broody mood because she was pecking the others and clucking the "cluck"

Well this morning she was still on it. I upset her when I took her "eggs" from her "golf balls" I let her have 3 BSL and 2 of my EEs eggs and 2 of her own eggs. Thats 7 total! I would have put more if I had not just set 20 eggs in the incubator!!

If all these hatch I will be overrun!
