Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Buffy is doing great with the two she hatched as well as the foster chick. All 3 were running around and eating, but especially the Welsummer (since it's older by a couple days).

Buffy must be a natural Momma because the Welsummer pullet was pecking and grabbing her wattles and Buffy just looked up but didn't peck the baby at all. Then the Welsummer hops on Buffy's back and preens itself and Buffy doesn't seem to mind that either. They are so fun to watch.

Buffy is still sitting on the other 3 eggs, but I'm just going to leave her for a couple more days.
Buffy may decide on her own to get up and leave to take care of her chicks, when she does you can remove the eggs. Glad to hear everything is going great..

Alright! I just candled everyone! I have 19 growing in the bator out of 22. The three were clears which I expected ALOT more clears than that since the dad to those eggs were sick and my friend had 15 in her bator and only 3 were fertile so I got lucky!

I also candled 4 of Henriettas 9 eggs mainly because I could only get 4 out. All of them were growing except one I am not sure on. It had a red circle not around the perimeter of the egg but going vertically in the egg. I left and will candle them again next sunday (Day 14). I cant wait only 14 more days!!

Haha! The chicks do that to Maxine's wattles, and she is the same way. They also crawl all over her, especially the Cochins, and she is so patient. She just sits quietly and lets them do it.

Alot of folks want nothing but pure breeds but this goes to show that mixes are beautiful. and make great mamas too.

my feeling is mutt's just like in the dog world are healthier as well. I love my pure breeds and my mutts. An EE is a mutt. Just an acceptable mutt to the masses.

I have another one that is a mutt also, she is an Ameraucana/Polish mix, and she is a great bird also, even though she has a funky hair do. lol I purchased her from the same guy at the same time as Maxine. I also had a roo that I got at the same time that was an Ameraucana/Polish mix. He had an awesome hair do, he had white spikes, like Guy Fieri, so we named him Guy. hehe He had double back toes on each foot, and he was an awesome roo (even though he was dumb as a stone). He was taken by a predator while he was protecting his flock. He must have intervened when a coyote tried to take one of our hens b/c she was missing almost all of the feathers on one wing. I miss him.

The only dogs we've ever had were mutts also. We currently have an Australian Shepherd/?? mix, and a Miniature Poodle/Miniature Pincher mix. Both great dogs. :)
