Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Wow lucky! Sumatras are one of my favorite breeds! The ones I had weren't very hardy for me in the cold weather here :/ Are your chicks going to be Sumatra too?
Mine do just fine is the winter. They are out and about in the snow or zero degree weather daily. Weather doesn't seem to effect my Sumatra's. Yes the chicks will also be Sumatra's.

They MUST feel/hear what is going on in those eggs by day 15. I sat in the coop for a bit this afternoon (covered with Ameraucanas). Miss Naima would purr and coo and then all of a sudden stand up like she had been struck with a hot poker. She would look between her legs. Inspect the eggs briefly. Her voice would change. And then she'd sit again. Fascinating to watch.

Water has been lowered to chick level. Miss Naima is sipping at it like it's fine wine. I really must get video ... <sigh>
i love your description!! i am sure they hear them, maybe minute chirps- wonder what that chick said that made her jump up??

Well all went well, I went bold and just gave Broody Mc Buff a chick from the incubator. I tricked her by coming in with my left hand for her to peck at and then added a chick from my right hand. It is good to see them all active. The picks kind of bombed, cheap camera, low light etc. I will try to get more.

Hiya, my friend, BG! Glad to be here. Wish I had more time to post - I'd be a posting fool to be sure! My new duck buddy, Miss Lydia, invited me over here!

CONGRATS, NH! If you don't already have Giants, you'll love them, I'm sure! (I COULD be a bit biased, though!)

I'll anxiously await the answer to your question as that is good information to have!
So far the Black Jersey Giant chicks win the cute chick award over the NH reds, Golden Comets or the Buff Orpington or the Red Rangers. Rangers are the ugly award winner.

So glad it worked and she looks very content and so do her babies.

Ugh! That little stinker Sunny keeps getting back in the nest box and screeching. I think she wants to be broody. She laid an egg today. So at least not yet.

Also the weather today is gorgeous. 70s and breezy. But by Friday it's back to 90s plus humidity. Not good broody weather.

CONGRATS, 3 NH! Good girl, Broody McBuff!

bobbies - yep, same here in Michigan. I was reminded by an experienced BYC-er (

) to put a fan on my broody hen - I've got one ready & waiting for the heat!

I've got a question - I'm picking up 250 bales of hay tomorrow...I'll need to pull the hay wagon into my barn, which is where my broody hutch is, with my splash Giant setting eggs. The hutch is going to have to be moved out of the barn...if we CAREFULLY and slowly move it just outside the barn, unload the hay (which will take several hours, being just DH and me), and then carefully move the hutch back in, do you think she'll continue to set the eggs?
