Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

GO SUMATRAS! Such beautiful, beautiful birds. Seeing the comments about them makes me really miss my Tomaru Loncrowers. Lovely birds!

Not sure how my Jersey Giant hen will do...I keep going to the barn only to find that she's pushed a few eggs out of the nest:



Miss Lydia suggested I mark these eggs and candle periodically...but I'd already tucked them back under her . When I do, she takes them, snuggles down on top, and seems like she's happy....yesterday, it was over 100, so my first thought was that she realized it was too to sit on them...but then when I went to the barn this morning, again, there were eggs out from under her, and it was only 76 degrees, so

I am just NOT having luck with broodies this year.

Exciting day!! My blue slate turkey hen has been sitting on some chicken eggs. I was in the coop checking temperatures/installing a new fan and I heard peeping. I checked and she has one hatchling and about 15 more eggs. I don't even know if they are all fertile but I guess I will find out soon. I will need to move her to the other coop, but I will give her more time (and wait until someone is here to help).

well the 2 Sumatra girls a Black and a Blue are back on their nests with fresh eggs. Now the big question is are they #13 and 14 or #'s 12 and 13. I forget and would need to go back through this thread to find out....

stony please. what does it matter your way ahead of the rest of us.

Why do you need to move her? is see too far off the floor? Congrats on the first hatchling.

OK, so that is a hen laying on top of my pine chip bag, Moe is in her broody box, you can just barely see her head through that triangle of woven wire, and who is that sitting in the nesting box? When i walked in to check on the new chicks he was like....baaaaawwk! You caught me! silly chickens.

funny and that reminds me. There was a rooster under a childs chair on my back deck this morning. I bet he was guarding a hen. I better look for eggs. The girls have laid there before. I like your girl in the pine shavings. Nice and game looking
