Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

That was my thought.

Ill have to ask Billy (the friend) how devolped it is, cause, if it was say a lump from not collecting a few days, fine, but if its an actual chick :th

Sometimes they wont lay in the nesr box but in the dog box, but I dunno how often we collect from there.

Ill see how the non-laying hen does if i set in the nest box w/ 2 of todays eggs. How long is an egg good in the fridge?I collected 2 like an hour ago, would they be good?

If theres any orp eggs we'll have orp chicks, (we have 3 hens who have OEGB fertile eggs, the other - new - hens have orp ) :celebrate

If the other one is still laying I'd still say the non layer is broody. Though usually they rip the feathers out to control humdity while they brood. Maybe the one with the patch is simply pulling out feathers in anticipation of being broody.

My broody hen hatched a chick this morning that I found dead.  It was still wet and there was quite a bit of sticky yolk I think.  I have one more that has a small hole in the shell and is trying to get out.  Any ideas why the chick is dead?  Does the hen not know what she is doing?  I sure dont!  She is in a small nest in my tractor it may be too hot?  Sorry if Im rambling but I dont know what to do.  Besides the egg with the hole in it the others are about 2-3 days from hatching.  The first two were a few days older.  Should I move her so she has more room and it isnt as hot?  I have a large dog kennel with a little run I used to raise my last chicks.

I'm so sorry about the loss of your chick. Sometimes chicks don't live after hatching. It takes a lot of effort to hatch from the shell. It could have been defective and the momma knew that and abandoned it. Just leave her alone at this point. The other chick should hatch shortly. Keep us posted!

tomorrow the egg i gave melow should have hatched so im locking the other hens out the shed for a few hours and i will test her to make sure she looks after it, also when my orps chick got out from under her she started pecking it? is that normal?

Thanks for the reassurance. I will post pics of a health baby soon I hope.

Found the culprit -

Half tail (the hen who i though twasnt laying) ISNT IT- ITS HER SISTER! She was on the nest, so i reached to check for an egg and she bit my pinkie! So i grabbed an egg from today, and set it BY her. She greedily put it under her

So, I may be asking more questions cause tomorrow she gets all the eggs laid (The one i gave her is no good- been in the fridge for several hours)

That refrigerated one mey be viable Trader Joes Eggs are kept at about 45 degrees for several days and there are people who are hatching them.

Boo hoo..Lucy killed and ate two of the chicks...I know it was her .... I went out side to restart and fuel the generator and she went into the top of the brooder. They were sound asleep and not making a sound...it's my own fault for not zipping the top closed, and she's a very young dog...and obviously not to be trusted....but I didn't even 'think' just went....now only two black and one yellow left....darn it all. She just earned a night outside, and maybe forever at that.
