Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Okay, I am ecstatic!

My broody splash Giant hen hatched a chick! Just one, she only had one egg left. It was due on Saturday, she hatched it Sunday late or early today. It's momma is a red naked neck, and father is a splash Giant. Baby is cutsey-cute!

Momma very upset w/me so I didn't fuss with her much - cute little chickie feetsies!

I snatched the baby out REAL quick & took a super fast photo - what an interesting color! But...not naked necked.

Going back under momma....

And almost gone....

I'm so happy for this broody...I could really tell she was REALLY wanting a chick...wish more had hatched, but I'm thrilled for one! I think she'll be a good momma.

My broody #2, Marans hen, is tight on the nest and today is day 8.

The little stinker Smokey is back in the nest box this evening. I'm thinking she'll be broody by Thursday at this rate. She laid today and if she stays overnight it will be her 2nd night off the roost. Just a matter of time.

Did I miss the pic?
Nope. He's keeping her all to himself. <JK!> no picture posted yet.

Hey Farmerboy! Good to see you. We are in broody heaven over here. It's a bit like the plague, one goes broody, then they all do! Found number 7 tonight under the porch steps hording eggs. I'm considering letting her hatch out there. She's staying there for tonight anyway. I'll just die if anything gets her, but I figure if nothing has found the eggs yet, they won't find her either. I can NOT keep up with these girls, I'm building little mini coops with runs to keep them out of the main coop as we lost a chick last week when our second broody was hatching out.

I have Broody number 2 (Popcorn, my absolute FAVORITE hen ~don't tell the others!) and Broody number 3, a Silkie, together with their babies. So far so good. I hope it's okay to let them brood together. Any advice?

Awh adorable! Yes cobroody is fine as long as they get along. My two broodies HATE each other.

Went out to lock up. Smokey is in a nest box by herself sitting on two ping pong balls. Topsy was barely sitting on the edge of another nest box because her two babies were crammed into the box with her! They are driving me crazy with that. They keep getting into her box with her all day and night. At first I thought it was cute, but with this heat I'm thinking she doesn't need additional bodies crammed in there. I moved her to a different box with her ping pong ball.

I have to get creative here shortly with their pen. Guess I'll just restaple the hardware cloth in place and put up a strip of landscape fabric like I did last time. That's as creative as I seem to get lately. I haven't the energy to mess with stuff outside when it's so humid and HOT!

The shipped eggs will probably get here on Wednesday so I better get cracking!

My broody just hatched her second batch! 6 out of 7 so far today. We are going to wait a little longer and see if #7 makes it. Pictures tomorrow!
