Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

After two years and several broody episodes...Rosie my GLW is FINALLY getting her way. Now that we have a rooster she has free eggs to hatch! She's sitting on NINE, two fo which are already at day 3 (I candled them last night). This is going to be a staggered hatch, with a 3 day spread, because the others kept laying eggs under her and I didn't catch it until now. Is this going to be a problem?

what day is good to candle ??? because i candled one and i didn't see anything but idk the yolk was one one side of the egg idk why .. well it was really dark on one side of the egg and its day 8 .. and ideas .. and she wont eat any food or drink any water .. shes been on the eggs 8 days and she never got off yet

She probably has gotten off at some point, broodies just tend to not be up when you are looking. I make my girl get some outdoor time about every three days but she has food and water in the coop so I almost never see her twitch. I just get The Look when I check on her.

Most people advise candling between the seventh and tenth days. That seems to be the best time for new people to recognize good v bad eggs.

Alright, I lied. I checked and all 7 eggs are talking to me :). One has a pip!!!! :D :D :D :D :D SOOOOOO excited! Going to get a picture of it for you guys :)

Probably not. As long as she stays put on the remaining eggs. Just be sure to provide water and food in with her for the new chicks so that she won't be tempted to leave as soon as the first ones turn 3 days old.

I guess so! It's so funny when the chicks chirp they look around like, "Who said that?"
