Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

6th egg hatched! It came from a blue egg. Really wanted an EE... but I have no idea what this chick is! It has orange feet, feathered legs, it sort of lookedlikea SLW without the stripes.... I think it had a beard/muffs. :)

opps he ... day 9 on the wait i can't stand it lol this is a first time broody hatch for me .. she seems to be doing good with them she finally got off the nest to get a drink but went right back on

I just got home to find one of the 4 chicks limping!! I picked it up to inspect gave it some vitamins.... And put it back as it was chirping its head off..... Well. It hobbled around and slumped on one side.... So I thought it best to take it out of the coop. I grabbed a buddy for it and well they are both chirping their heads off looking for mama. The one chick is limited in mobility and isn't really moving around the brooder.... I think maybe it got stepped on by one of the teenagers in some of their mayhem while I was gone?? I really don't know.... What should I do?? Should I put them back with mama and the hooligans?? Or will they settle down .... Poor things.....

I'd put it back and let whatever happens happen. Hoping everything goes well.

Has anyone ever tried introducing a new pullet with a hen on the nest? She is literally the only hen in the coop right now so I don't know how she will take to a new girl walking in. I have Matilda (new girl) in a separate hutch right now (he future broody hutch so I don't have to worry about a broody shaing in the coop again). I was planning to wait at least another two weeks just to help the little girl hold her own but any other advise would be helpful.
I can segregate Summer inside the coop, she is nesting in a cat crate. Just don't know if that will help. :/

I haven't brought in new ones with someone sitting broody, but I would be hesitant to do that with my flock dynamics. My guess is she will see her as the intruder she is and flog her as best she can. Maybe a side by side period of a week would help them get introduced and not stress the broody or the new girl. Can you wire off a section for both?

The chicks keep coming out of the hen's feathers!  It's so cute! I snapped some pictures... Daisy and Houdinni keep purring.. I think they're proud!
Oh, and by the way. Turns out Teddy (The NN) is um... a lot of different breeds! Teddy is..
Naked Neck (The neck has no feathers)
Easter Egger (Green feet, and muffs. No beard. Also has the EE design.)
Silkie (has 5 toes and feathery feet)

Teddy is also doing great :).

The two other piped eggs should hatch in like an hour :).

The one trying to get back under Houdinni after eating is a SLW mix, no name yet. The yellow chick with the black dot is named Dot, Light Brahamamix, and the bantam at the bottom... no idea. No name yet.

Another picture of them running around

Dot and the bantam

Teddy came out just to check what was happening :).

This has been a great expirience! No worries, they all came out on their own. They don't want to stay in their Momma's :).

Awh! Adorable, hope you get the blue layer you're wanting!
