Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

thanks she was my fav of the 3 she followed me every where she listened to her name and everything but idk what happened it sucks

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm glad you have your memories to give you comfort.

The hardest part for me about my flock is the losses. But I love having chickens too much to let that stop me as losses are a part of life.

Hugs.

thank you so much i had only two chickens die since i had them since chicks .. i had them for a few months all my chickens .. but my adults i got them for free since my chickens were all killed and my ducks from foxes

We just got home and I went to check on the chicks. I saw Smokey squatted down keeping babes warm in the coop. But I noticed Topsy wasn't there. I found her under the coop showing her black feathered baby how to scratch for food, but the white feathered one was missing. Turns out Smokey had her along with the two Maran chicks hidden away. Lol.

I swiped the baby back from Smokey and put it under Topsy who quickly started teaching her as well. If Smokey steals it again and Topsy lets her I won't interfere. Smokey is higher in pecking order and she can be brutal to Topsy.

Interesting that Smokey stole the chick that hatched from the blue egg that I had taken from her for Topsy to hatch. I wonder if she recognizes it somehow or if it was just a coincidence?

Yaaay everyone looks great this morning!

I think it would be a miricale for me if i spoke to soon and the chick is a girl. But i don't think that will happen :(, Im not sure which one i want to go. I love them both, it wont be going till october so i will know for sure if it's male or female..

that's what happened with my BO chick!, When i took the egg off the mother when it was peeping and give ti to Melow it's like she knew it was hers when she met it!

She might have recognized her babe because it could have been chirping in the egg. I gave the egg to Topsy before it pipped.

I know Smokey acted like she heard something familiar when the chick chirped after it hatched in the coop. I dismissed it as my imagination, but I guess it's possible.

Time will tell whether she will want the baby back or release it to Topsy.
