Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Can't resist; must post...!

They are not quite a week old yet. I took this yesterday morning. Seems like every time I go out they have more feathers coming in. The Big Chicks (blondie and red heads) even are getting in tail feathers already! Silkie babies are getting feathers in too, but their new feathers are almost identicle to their baby fuzz!

the new RIR broody and her lil ones on their 1st day out

both RIR broody's and their lil ones

the dark blue Sumatra and her 8 fuzzy butts on their 1st ever outing

the 2 black Sumatra's are still hatching so no pics or head count there.

We're all about the bling, er I mean chicks! so cute!

Newbie question here - I broke my broody silkie 2 weeks ago now and still haven't had an egg from her again. She has however started to sleep in the puppy pile with the nearly 3 month old silkies. How long until she might start to lay again?

I haven't successfully broken my broody girls yet. But I do know that my broody girls start to lay again around the 5th or 6th week after the chicks hatch.

when I have to break a broody they start laying again pretty quickly. Generally within a week, 2 at the most

Thanks for the responses. Everyone else I have asked said the same thing. That's why I find it so strange that she hasn't started again. Is it possible that she is "mothering" to the younger silkies now, and that is messing her up?? She really never gave them the time of day before...

Do they give up their chicks early? Mine usually start between 3-6 weeks after they have hatched. My barred rock is bored of motherhood and it will be 4 weeks tomorrow. She started squatting a week ago again. I should be getting eggs any day now.
