Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

There is some black silkies in a pet shop close to me but im not aloud anymore untill a hen dies :(

She is a beauty. When she was a chick we thought she was going to be partridge because she had the same look as our partridge silkie. She looked like a little chipmunk. But as she has matured she has turned such a pretty blackish brown shade. I think she hatched from a lavender splash egg, I'd have to check my records to be sure.

Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly. I just changed out the food for them. I just didn't know if the scratch would cause them harm. This is my very first hatch ever with a broody hen and I have to say the bator seems very complicated compared to Mother Nature. I only have two that hatched out of the 4 eggs she was laying on and these chicks act so differently compared to buying chicks and raising them without the Mother Hen. I don't know if you can answer another quick question. Here in Southern California the weather is really hot right now and I am not super comfortable putting them out side in a seperate pen due to the heat. (90+ degree weather with 78% humidity) I just think that would be to hard on them. How long should I wait before I put Mama and chicks outside?
As long as you provide plenty of cold fresh water regularly they will be ok outside, momma will take the little ones to shade and teach them what is safe for them :)

*hugs* Heather x

I finally feel safe enough to let my pennies (RSL - all named Penny) free range with Flora Mae (mom #2). Marge kind of gave up and has started laying again, but still takes them around and beats up on anyone trying to hurt them.

I cut baby sized holes all through the silkie pen so they can go back in and come back out as they please. The silkies are in the pen because of bully roosters.

Jagger is a barred rock (hatchery quality). He is the sweetest boy ever. He loves his chicks :)

Only issues I have with roosters picking on the babies are the teenagers. My 15 week olds are the worst after the ducks D=< Those ducks HATE the babies!
