Let the hen decide. Is the chick struggling? Did it show signs of life when you found it?My Silver Laced Cochin, Sula went broody, and as we also had a Blue Cochin Rooster who is about 6 months old, we decided to put some eggs under her. Three of them did not seem fertile, and had no signs of hatching at day 21 or after. Day 21 was Monday for two eggs, and Monday morning we went into the chicken coop to hear peeping and one had hatched. The second egg that was due to hatch seemed to have a small crack in the shell. It seemed bigger last night then it had yesterday morning, but no peeping, or much more signs of hatching. I found out yesterday that Sula left the nest via the ramp we built for her and the babies, to bring her baby down for some food and water. Again, she left the nest this morning to get some food for her baby. The egg was cold upon my exam this morning. I did put the egg under my Rhode Island Red who is broody right now in the hopes that the baby will finish hatching. But is it now 24 hrs post hatching of the baby who successfully hatched. At what point do I assume the baby died during the hatching process?
