Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

My cuckoo maran chick keeps chasing the orp one away, it wont let it go near the mother so it follows them and when its lucky sneaks on the other side of the mother, is this normal??

I know, and I am pretty sure none are rotten, cause she kicked one out that was at about day 15. She really is a good broody, I just keep second guessing mother nature, no matter how hard I try not too

It could be the colder weather we've started to get is delaying the hatches. And like Stony said about the clock, they aren't precise about watching the calendar. I know it took Topsy two days longer than it took Smokey to hatch her eggs. So sometimes it's just the broody's skills. I'd let her go another week and then pull to candle them. As long as they aren't stinky, what will it hurt. :)

Melow has nothing to do with the chicks anymore, she hasnt for about a month now, she still knows they were her chicks so she never pecks them away from food, shes going through a moult at the moment so isnt happy here is her today:

It's usually the mother that chases them off. I've seen mothers chase away the cockerels and then maybe a week later, she'll chase away the pullets.

He may just be beginning to "feel his oats" and as long as he doesn't hurt her, I would imagine that it will all work out. But if he gets to be more violent, you might consider separating him somewhere.

when he chases her he pecks her and she lets of a squak, they eat fine together no pecking at all its just when they free range and sit down the maran like to have mama to him self...
