Old fashioned Broody thread for ducks 2013 edition

Snow noir-- sorry but I don't have Scovies. My Khaki Campbell sat on her 1st nest and hatched successfully. YMMV.

Both the Old Ladies left their nest today to eat, I took the opportunity to candle. One does not look good, but I didn't remove it. The others are quite dark with really huge air cells-- nearly half the egg, I didn't see any movement today or hear any sounds. JW-- what do ya think?

2 of my other girls went broody around the same time. 1 had an egg explode on her so she gave up (14 eggs). The other just gave up (17 eggs). We've determined that the first time a girl goes broody, it'll only last a few weeks and not to expect anything. Have you found that to be true with your girls?

Totally depends on the duck, i have had it go both ways and like Miss Lydia i had a baby killer. I knew when my mama sat so i had a ball park day set out, i knew things were getting close when she stopped leaving. She was sat so tight it was crazy.

It's hard i do think ducks know when there no good, i experienced it again with this hatch too. It's stressful that's for sure lol

We ended up with only three babies, and one thinks the drake is its momma, but they are healthy babies! Both parents are doing great with the little ones!

Here's our Mini Silver Appleyard, Henrietta, sitting for her first time on 7 eggs. She'll only be a year old this July.
I candled one of the eggs today (Day 8) and it is developing normally. Yay!
She has been such a good broody, and her dear husband Woodward is a dutiful father.
I want to put a helmet and a mini toy gun on him when I see him pacing back and forth in front of their house. He charges at anything that comes near it.

I went to check on my girl, like always, and something was moving around her feet. Then I realized she was standing up and something was moving that wasn't her!! And then, there were a bunch of little things moving around her feets!!! And it hit me. I stood there, tried not to scream, ran inside and started dancing with my dog cause I'm SO flipping excited right now!!!!!!

I don't know how many there are, I think 5 at least. I'm trying to calm down before I go to try and steal pictures. I'm SO jazzed! (can you tell)
