Old fashioned Broody thread for ducks 2013 edition

Well one of the eggs X'ed she tossed from the nest yesterday, it was not fertile, she basically cooked it. So there were 10 eggs i sneaked in counted the other day, so now 9. I am unsure whether anything past her two are fertile. The original eggs are looking like they were duds.

Well that's one way to get steamed eggs.

This is normal right?!?

My duck is getting on & on the nest. She doesnt sit in it all day she goes back and forth to check on her nest & starts chirping. She sounds like a puppy its so cute haha!!

ATM we have 13 eggs I now she isnt done laying but I need to do some sort of birth control. Should I take away the oldest eggs or the newest? We are not going to eat them - eating duck eggs reminds me of eating Balut

I'd wait to take the oldest eggs out until she is sitting all the time. if you take the eggs too soon she'll just keep adding to them .. she'll settle down soon I'd think especially if she is chirping. does she fluff her feathers and look and act like she wants to take some heads off? and good for you getting that lid off the crate, I bet that was a job. Baking with duck eggs is awesome you need to try it.

Yeah when you go near her she chirps like crazy then sometimes not all the time shes puffed up. when the chickens go check her nest she starts chirping bad. But hasnt bitten anyone but the annoying chicks that seem to hang out by her brooder. The male wont go near her at all lmao...

I had to unscrew the side panel to get that lid off roflmao I am definitely gonna put a brooder box that has access from the outside. I guess I better go see what else I can make or turn into something sigh....

I let the ducks out this morning I noticed something odd. The drake was sitting in the nest, I wish I could have gotten a pic. I opened the door the duck started chirping at me to get the heck out of the way. The drake came out looking all puffed up that even the feathers in his head was sticking out. I think my drake has gone broody too

. I let them out before I let the chickens out to see what she will do. She ran off & did her thing. As I was getting feed & stuff around the normally shy off-standish drake was following me around all puffed up & hissing at me... I got the heck out of dodge fast. When I came back to check on them 15 min later the duck was back in the coop sitting on the eggs

. the drake met me at the door & started hissing. What on earth is going on??!?! I left some food & water in the duck coop & shut the door.

When my dd let the chickens out she came back real fast saying the male duck was mad at her

..... ill take pics after the bus gets here....

LOL.. i recall my one drake doing that, it was odd but didn't last... i think the boys just get lost when all the girls go broody and aren't quite sure what to do with themselves.
