My hen got flystrike, I used dawn dish soap. It got all the maggots off in one try. I recommend that.

Yes that link was helpful, thank you! I'm overwhelmed with the amount of maggots. It's been an all day event over here. I'm so nauseous from this. So far I've bathed and soaked her non stop she's so weak. I don't know how this got passed me she seemed perfectly fine until this morning!Did you look at the link I posted? It has very helpful information from a fairly reputable source.
Maggots feed on the skin of the chicken, causing sores. Those sores need to be treated. She does say that peroxide can be used for the first couple treatments, but should not be used more than that as it can kill live tissue and prevent the wound from healing if used too much. Additionally, it wouldn't be a bad idea to attempt to figure out why the vent was covered in poo in the first place. She may have another illness that caused the poo issue and the flystrike is secondary to that.
All of the maggots need to be removed and you'll likely need to repeat the treatment multiple times per day for several days until all maggots and hatching eggs are gone and any wounds are healed. If the sores are very bad, she may need antibiotics. It is also advised NOT to use any type of ointment as maggots tend to thrive in the warm, moist environment.
I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this. I'm sure it's distressing for you and your hen. She likely needs some sort of nutrient supplementation. I don't know what the timeline is for attempting to treat vs. putting her out of her misery. I'm certainly no expert, but she could very likely have an underlying health issue that caused this to happen. Is there a vet in your area you can contact? I'm sorry. Yes I have a bird vet about an hour away im going call him in the morning. I honestly didn't expect her to go down hill so fastly. I'm heart broken and disappointed I didn't see this faster. Took me by surprise. I've had her for 6 years and she is a sweet human loving chicken. Never had a chicken with such a outgoing happy personality. She's always been so healthy.
