Old hens with "water bottom"

    I've taken in two 4-5yr. old girls, a RIR & a Buckeye. They came from a good,clean, local home. I wanted to "warm the nest" before my chicks arrive in May. It's been 6 months since a predator killed my flock. The new/old girls are settling in fine, this is only their second night but they both have what I call water bottom, like duck poop. Their vents are in constant motion even when nothing is coming out. Anyone have an idea? Should I be concerned for the chicks? What can I do?

    I would have never brought them into what was a clean site. There are many causes of watery droppings, I would try posting in the disease forum, they may be able to give you an idea over there. Personally I would cull them and wait for your fresh chicks. You don't need to start out with introducing diseases.

    Otherwise if you wish to keep them I wouldn't put them anywhere you plan to keep your chicks. After they mature a bit they might be able to handle anything the old birds are carrying.
