Hi, everyone!
I'm Kelly, a life-long bird lover who first found this site in about 2003 or so, when my first pet chicken, "Tyson," fell off the back of a poultry truck and started an obsession. I brought Tyson back to health after a broken wing from the fall, when a latch on the truck popped loose and she fell onto the highway. Being a bird owner (African Grey parrot and cockatiel), I knew chicken were social animals so naturally I got another chicken to keep her company. This one was a Silver Laced Wyandotte, a real beauty. From there, became interested in all the old breeds, and went on to raise exotic pheasants.
Well, long story short, I lost my home and my custom aviaries, and I have not owned birds since. Once you've had a fresh egg, you cannot eat one from a styrofoam carton again. Finally, I am ready to get maybe 2 or 3 pet hens, under the guise of getting fresh eggs.
I'm an empty nester who stared a teaching career late in life...and after two years decided to try something else. So, I am here to gain knowledge about chicken health and maintenance, and to chat with other "bird people."
I live in Georgia, so please advise on the best places to find healthy, antique breeds.
Cheers!
_Kelly
