Old-timer trying to raise some chicks again

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

We border a forest, but your place sounds extreme!

The article @N F C linked has great ideas!

At a minimum:

I'd build a fence around our coop with 1/2" hardware cloth, then put electrified poultry netting around that. Chickens need about 15 sq ft per bird in their run.

I'd get a 6-pack of solar motion lights and aim half at the coop and the other half at the areas most likely direction for predators. I'd take those dogs, on leashes if necessary, and go around the property line several times with them. Their scent may ward off some things.

A general rule for moving chicks outdoors is around 6 weeks when they are fully feathered, but depending on where you are and nighttime temps, you could maybe put them out earlier.

Since you've not had chickens for a while, they will call the predators in. I wouldn't put them out there until they will be safe.
