I drove to the nearest feed store with chicks this weekend and found a huge variety which meant I spent about an hour milling about with an empty cardboard box in my hands, trying to make a decision. I ended up going choosing a white-crested black Polish straight run. I've heard that if you pick a chick up and hold it on its back, if it goes limp, it means its a female, right?? That's what I'm hoping anyway. Anyone have any success with this method of sexing?

i don't know how to post a link to a thread here on BYC...but go into "search" and type in:

odd chick sexing technique, anyone seen this?

and read that thread. i personally don't have any experience with it YET....but i'm trying it on some silkies i hatched out a couple weeks ago. pay special attention to the guy who speaks about laying the chick on it's back (in your hand) till it relaxes, if both feet stick straight out, it's a roo....if one foot sticks out and the other is drawn in, it's a hen. outta my 3 silkies (according to this theory) i have 2 roos and one hen. only time will tell if it works.
