Old Wooden Playhouse Coop Conversion in Progress- Picture Heavy and more to come!

Coastal Farm and Garden in Oregon City has it. That's where I get mine.

Ohhh, thanks! Maybe I can go ahead with the plan of Poop boards after all! :)

So we started the project of putting on the roof today! After searching and searching, and finally considering buying new cedar shake, we finally found a listing on craigslist for enough free cedar fencing to make our own shake. It's pretty weathered, but still very solid wood, so I'm sure it will last us a good while. And it was free! Thank goodness, because we were going to need almost 3 squares of cedar shake for the roof(including the roof for the run) and the cheapest we found was $110 a square! Ugh. Was not looking forward to that expense.

It looks pretty much exactly like the old roof we tore off did, so I'm super happy about that. We got one side almost completely done, and are doing the other side and the ridge tomorrow. All we need inside is the ceiling plywood and the vents to be covered in wire and the girls can move in(with the heat lamp still)!

My husband Dan is dorky:

And he is afraid of heights, so this is BIG for him:

It still needs this pieces on the front and back ends to fill in the gaps where the overlap started, but we ran out of light, so that is happening tomorrow.

And one half of the roof on:

We put the shake on wonky and not lined up on purpose, we like that wacky DIY aesthetic.

Very original, I like it

and I bet the chicks will too! I built my own coop to and it's much more worth it than buying one, I think.

Oh My Gosh. We hiked five miles mostly uphill today (to Angels Rest near Multnomah Falls, which you would only know if you're from Oregon), then came home and raced to finish the coop like we swore we would this weekend. Well, it's not totally finished, but finished enough for the girls to move in!! We finished the rest of the roof, and covered every one of the vents with wire fencing, as well as put up the plywood slant ceilings (the flat actual ceiling is wire to allow for the peak vents to vent properly), and blocked off the next boxes so the chicks don't sleep in them. We have the light out there with them, and still will for another month at least because they are not all fully feathered, but they have officially moved in! As soon as I can get my phone to turn on from being super dead, I'll post the pictures.

Is it just me, or were yall SUPER nervous when you moved your babies into the coop for their first night? I have checked on them every 15 minutes or so since we moved them out and I am so worried! I am sure it's secure, and that nothing can get in there and eat them, but I just can't shake the worry that we missed something. I guess I just need to calm down and have faith....

Like I said, it's not totally finished... We still need to put all the trim back on, add a few more sections of plywood to the inside of the roof, weather strip around the door and the egg collection hatch, and paint the whole this inside and out (not to mention start building the run! Ugh!) but were in the home stretch as far as the coop itself goes! I started a new teaching job this week, so were on strictly weekends working on it from now on, so we better buckle down and get to work next weekend.... I am not looking forward to still be building when the rainy season starts. We are also working on bricking a patio in the backyard, and once that is done we're going to lay down sod (since end of summer is a good time for that here) so we'll have a nice back yard again instead of a dusty construction area. I can't wait!!

Our girls in the coop finally!

And I went back out to check on them, and of course they are all piled in the corner. :)

And it looks super creepy all lit up red in the dark backyard! Our back neighbors are probably wondering what the heck it is, since the big back vent is much higher than the top of our back fence and it's all lit up red. Haha!

OOOhhhh, looks cozy. The first night is always the hardest. They will be fine in such a chicken palace.

Well we must have done something right! Nothing got into the coop to eat the chickens (and lord knows our cat probably tried, he's been drooling over the girls since they came home with us!) and they are out there happily trotting around in their huge new space! I need to get them a chick stick or put some grass in there so they have something to do since they don't have a run to go out in yet. I am so excited!

Picked up some $5 paint today off the oops paint rack at Lowes that is the perfect color for the coop! It was a magical moment. :)

It needs a second coat, and I need to keep working on the trim and such, but it's looking better already! I was REALLY hating that slate blue. Tomorrow this inside is getting painted, and then this weekend, we'll start (and hopefully finish) building the run, which will be white like the trim. Progress!! :D

And don't worry, the chicken ramp is gonna get treads. It's more of a slide right now... Haha!
